Cape Spartel, cape forming the northwestern corner of Africa. Cape Spartel may be said to mark the point where the Strait of Gibraltar and the Atlantic Ocean meet. Known to the ancients as Ampelusium, the cape is 10 km (6 mi) west of the city of Tangier in Morocco. The view from the promontory is spectacular and is an attraction to tourists. A lighthouse, built in 1860, overlooks the ocean from the cape.
